The City of Surrey has recently begun the process of replacing existing on-street parking meters in addition to creating new pay parking areas.

New Parking Stations

The new pay parking station units have the following key features:

  • Solar-powered:  sustainable, use of modern technology
  • Ability to service 10-15 parking stalls:  replaces multiple pole meters, reducing sidewalk clutter and visual intrusion, thereby improving the quality of the street environment
  • Wireless communications:  ease of monitoring and implementation, no return to vehicle after payment, and credit card or cash payment
  • Increased security:  reinforced and secure construction to deter vandalism and theft attempts
  • Aesthetics:  modern design

At these locations, existing length of stay parking restrictions will either be retained or slightly modified and any uncontrolled parking within these areas will be replaced with time-controlled parking.

Hours of operation vary across Surrey based on localised parking needs.  Hours and days of enforcement are clearly marked on the Pay Parking signs.

As future demand warrants, the City expects further phased expansion in areas where there is a high demand for parking.

Parking Rates

Parking rates will remain consistent with existing City pricing and remain the lowest in the Metro Vancouver region.  On-street parking will be charged as follows:

15 minutes (minimum)  25¢
30 minutes  50¢
1 hour  $1
2 hours (maximum*)  $2

*Unless otherwise posted.

Using a Pay Station

All transactions should start by pushing the green button to activate the machine.  Payments can be made with cash or credit card, with two separate instructions provided on the front of the pay station based on the payment type used.

View payment instructions here.

Payments are linked to your vehicle through the license plate details you enter into the pay station.  It is important that the details are correct as any mis-match between the details entered into the pay station and those on your vehicle will result in a fine by our enforcement staff.

Receipts are only issued after successful transactions.  Users are notified of a cancelled transaction by an on-screen message.  "Transaction cancelled" slips are not provided.

Background

The City is responsible for the management of on street parking and we employ a range of parking restrictions and controls to ensure that parking does not impact on the safe and free movement of traffic. Where parking is available, we seek to provide this in a way that is fair and equitable. This will help ensure shoppers, those doing business or visitors will have parking available and will provide a regular turn-over of vehicles thereby supporting local businesses.

As the City has grown, level of competition for on street parking between different road users has increased and we have employed new tools to effectively manage this demand including on street charging for parking using parking meters. Many of these have reached the end of their operational life so the City has invested in new parking machines to replace these. While doing so, we have identified additional locations where the pressure for parking is such, that parking controls and charging are required. New parking stations have been installed at a number of locations across the City starting in November 2009.

Transition Period

During the first week of operation at each location, the City expects there to be a period of familiarization and to assist with the smooth transition to the new parking pay stations, 'Street Ambassadors' will be available on-site to provide assistance. Full enforcement of the parking areas will commence after the first week of operation.
