Surrey, BC – On September 10, over 4,500 people celebrated the 18th Annual Fleetwood Festival held at the Fleetwood Community Centre and nearby Francis Park. As part of the family-fun event, there was a special ceremony to honour the late Rick Hart for his 25 years of community service and leadership.
Hart, who passed away on July 2, 2016, was an active community advocate and leader in Surrey for 25 years. Named Surrey’s 2016 Good Citizen of the Year, he was former president of the Fleetwood Community Association and contributed to the creation of Francis Park, Bucci Park, the Fleetwood Town Centre Plan, and the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex.
“Rick Hart was an exceptional individual that demonstrated the highest standard of commitment and dedication in bringing about positive change in Fleetwood and our city,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “His tireless and selfless efforts have made Surrey a better place for all our residents. Rick is greatly missed.”
Attendees were treated to a variety of free all-ages games, activities and entertainment, including performances by local youth and cultural groups, Story with Dorie, Irish dancing, acrobats, a magic show, henna tattoos and balloon twisting. There were also many vendors on site. Food was provided by Fresh Street Market.
“On behalf of the City of Surrey, I would like to thank our 2016 Fleetwood Festival sponsors for their continued support in the Fleetwood community,” added Mayor Hepner. “This annual event never fails to deliver and once again this year’s festival is another fine example of how to build connections and bring a community together.”
