Surrey, BC – A new outdoor fitness space for seniors opened today in the area connecting the Newton Recreation Centre, Seniors’ Centre and Library. The space features fitness equipment, rubber safety surfacing, walking loop, benches, outdoor patio space, new planting beds, planters and artwork by Paulo Majano.

The realization of this project is the result of a community effort that included fundraising support from listeners of Surrey-based radio station REDFM; $46,260 was donated by REDFM to fund the project’s fitness equipment and benches, which includes monies raised through the “REDFM Run & Walk” in August 2014.

“I would like to thank and commend REDFM for their community leadership and fundraising efforts,” said Mayor Linda Hepner. “Our outdoor spaces are a key component to ensuring a healthy and active community, and this new fitness space will be enjoyed by our seniors for many years to come.”

This space has been purpose-built to be accessible and inclusive to seniors, and the whole community. Its design has been based on community feedback gathered at the Newton Community Festival as well as from seniors at the Newton Seniors Centre.

“Newton is home to a large senior population, and investments such as this are so important to making sure seniors are supported in keeping active and engaged,” said Councillor Barbara Steele, Chair of the Seniors’ Advisory & Accessibility Committee. “This outdoor fitness space is a great addition to the neighbourhood and supports the City’s commitment to fostering an age-friendly community in Surrey.”
