Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team
Find out what this working group is doing to promote universal design, accessibility and inclusion for Surrey residents.
Originally established in 2008 as the Measuring Up Committee, the Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team (SALT) is a network of community leaders dedicated to full inclusion and accessibility across all stages of life.
Many of the committee members are persons living with a disability, and thus perspectives are informed by rich and diverse lived experiences. SALT enhances inclusion and accessibility by helping to inform the City of Surrey’s Accessibility Action Plan and associated implementation plans. SALT is a network of community leaders with the mission to make Surrey an accessible and inclusive community that welcomes and values all abilities.
The purpose of SALT is to provide input on the City of Surrey’s Accessibility Action Plan and help make City of Surrey buildings and services more accessible and inclusive by embracing all abilities. This includes engaging the group’s diversity and resources to create inclusive environments, remove barriers, develop relationships, and promote accessibility and inclusion. SALT meets the membership requirements of the Accessible BC legislation for an accessibility committee.

Event highlights
International Day of Persons with Disabilities
On December 3, we celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities at Surrey City Hall, embracing this year’s theme: “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.”
The event was a resounding success, thanks to our amazing community and the Surrey Accessibility Leadership Team (SALT), who showcased the incredible strides being made to promote accessibility and inclusion in our city.
SALT's recent work
Nicomekl Riverfront Park Project
SALT provided valuable input on the design of the upcoming Nicomekl Riverfront Park Project, ensuring that features and proposals are accessible at all stages of a visitor's experience in the park. This aligns with Action 1.1 and Action 2.1 of the City of Surrey's Accessibility Action Plan.
WALK-it Activity Program
SALT members provided in-person feedback on the WALK-it Activity Program and web map during a sunny day outdoors. Their input will support the development of an accessibility map for Surrey facilities, helping residents identify accessible features and amenities. This aligns with Action 2.1 of Surrey's Accessibility Action Plan.
