Surrey Fire Service Honours Citizen for Rescue Efforts
June 5, 2015
Surrey Fire Service proudly presented Yvonne Bernardy-Dearden with an Award of Merit for her quick action and courage in helping to save a sleeping couple from a house fire in the 17000 block of 0 Ave.
Just before 6am on May 25th, Ms. Bernardy-Dearden was on her way to work when she spotted flames coming from the home. The fire was burning in the attic space of the house and as a result the smoke alarm was not activated. When fire crews arrived the home was fully engulfed and was upgraded to a second alarm. Ms. Bernardy-Dearden’s rapid and selfless response ensured the couple escaped safely and prevented the possibility of a tragic outcome.
Chief Len Garis recognized Ms. Bernardy-Dearden for her notable actions at a small ceremony at Fire Hall 14 in South Surrey where she was awarded her commendation. On hand at the presentation were the homeowners Ms. Bernardy-Dearden helped get to safety, Andy and Carol Johnston.
