Opera Arias and Broadway Show Tunes Take Centre Stage in Surrey

Centre Stage at Surrey City Hall

January 15, 2015

Surrey, BC – On Saturday January 24, the Vancouver Opera will again bring the best of opera hits and Broadway tunes to Surrey. The affordable, family-friendly concert will be performed by this year's participants in VO's acclaimed Yulanda M. Faris Young Artists program, a springboard for artists on the verge of launching international careers.

The 90 minute concert is being held at Surrey’s Centre Stage in City Hall. It will feature selections from the world's most famous operas, including Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, La bohème, Die Fledermaus and more, as well as numbers from My Fair Lady, West Side Story, South Pacific, Sweeney Todd and other Broadway hits.

Surrey’s new “Centre Stage”, is also its City Hall Council Chambers, which has been designed to transform into a 200-seat venue equipped for theatre, music, and dance. “Centre Stage is an example of Surrey’s commitment to developing innovative arts and cultural facilities, programs and services for our city,” said City of Surrey Mayor, Linda Hepner. “We are extremely pleased to be welcoming a world class organization such as the Vancouver Opera to Surrey. We look forward to a wonderful evening of musical entertainment.”

Vancouver Opera is the second largest opera company in Canada. It is regarded worldwide for its fine mainstage productions; for its country-leading education programs, which have reached more than 1.6 million children and their families during the past 40 years; for its innovative and award-winning community programs; and for forging ground breaking cross-cultural creative partnerships that have brought opera to new generations of Canadians.

“As Chair of the Culture Development Advisory Committee, I am delighted to see that the Vancouver Opera continues to make Surrey a priority in their community outreach program,” said Councillor Judy Villeneuve. “As their sold out concert at the Surrey Arts Centre last February demonstrated, there is a large fan base for opera and musical theatre in Surrey.”

Tickets for the performance are $25 ($15 for seniors/students with ID), including service charges and are now available from the Surrey Arts Centre Box Office, online at or by phone at 604-501-5566.
