Surrey Tree Lighting Festival kicks-off the holiday season

Together with a young festival goer, Mayor Watts flips the switch to light the tree

November 24, 2014

SURREY, BC - The City of Surrey's annual Tree Lighting Festival, presented by Coast Capital Savings, kicked-off the holiday season in style on Saturday at Surrey’s City Hall Plaza. Spirits were high as thousands of festival-goers came out to take part in the family event.

“It was such a pleasure to see so many people come out for our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Festival,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “It is truly a magical moment when we flip the switch to light up the tree. The festival is such a great opportunity to bring the community together for some early holiday cheer.”

Legendary children’s entertainer Fred Penner and Treehouse TV stars, Bobs n’ Lolo, performed for the kids, and Canadian pop-sensation Alyssa Reid took to the stage at 8pm. Free family activities included Letters to Santa Station, Kids World, Story Time Igloo, life-sized snow globe, road hockey, and food trucks. The festival also included a satellite location at nearby Central City Shopping Centre where the young and the young-at-heart stood-by as Santa made his 2014 debut.

“Once again, the annual Surrey Tree Lighting Festival was a wonderful way for the entire community to come together in celebration of the arrival of the holiday season,” said Wendy Lachance, Director, Community Leadership, Coast Capital Savings. “We at Coast Capital Savings are proud to support it.”
