Surrey, BC – At the bequest of its founder, Francisca Darts, a $4 million endowment has been established to sustain Surrey’s Darts Hill Garden Park in perpetuity. The endowment, announced Saturday at Darts Hill Garden, has been designated as part of the late Mrs. Darts’ estate.

Darts Hill Garden was created by Francisca and Edwin Darts, and in 1994 Francisca gifted the Garden to the City of Surrey to maintain it as a centre for preservation, enhancement, and development of horticultural specimens. The 7.5 acre park was established over 70 years and is well-known for its variety of rare and precious plants, shrubs and trees.

“Darts Hill Garden was a wonderful and generous gift from Francisca Darts to the residents of Surrey, and because of this endowment, the garden will continue to grow and flourish for the enjoyment of generations to come,” said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts.

“This garden is a jewel in South Surrey thanks to the generosity of the Darts, and it is sustained with the help of many volunteers and community members,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “I want to take this opportunity to thank those volunteers – guides, gardeners, and most notably, Darts Hill Garden Society, for their ongoing commitment to sustaining the garden, and embracing Francisca Dart’s vision.”

The ‘Darts Hill Garden Park Endowment Fund’ will be managed by SurreyCares (formerly known as the Surrey Foundation). The City of Surrey will use interest generated from the Fund to support the on-going care and enhancement of the garden.

“We thank Francisca and Edwin Darts for gifting our community with this wonderful legacy,” says Jeff Hector, President of the SurreyCares Foundation.
