Surrey, BC - The Green Surrey program, a key initiative in the Environmental Pillar of the City’s Sustainability Charter, has been adopted by Mayor and Council. A strong environmental vision is central to the development of the City of Surrey, and the Green Surrey program is an evolution of the City’s commitment to conservation, investment and engagement in the environment.

“The Green Surrey initiative underscores our commitment to the environment,” said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “Surrey already leads the way in sustainable design, ‘green’ buildings and ‘green’ infrastructure and the Green Surrey program will further strengthen the City’s greening pledge. The plan will foster healthy ecosystems and preserve our natural, living heritage with its long-term vision for stewardship of Surrey’s natural environment.”

Building on the City’s environmental goals and consistent with the City’s Five Year Financial Plan, the Green Surrey program builds on existing initiatives and provides new greening opportunities within three themes:

1. Conservation - The protection, preservation and enhancement of Surrey’s existing natural resources.

2. Investment – Investment in infrastructure and programs to enhance and develop Surrey’s natural resources.

3. Engagement – Opportunities for Surrey residents and businesses to actively support the Green Surrey Program and its goals, through advocacy, education and participation in environmental programs and initiatives.

“Strengthening and expanding our green infrastructure is crucial to maintaining Surrey’s status as one of Canada’s most livable cities,” adds Councillor Bruce Hayne, Chair of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee. “The creation of the Green Surrey program will enhance the preservation of our natural assets and further communicate our commitment to integrating sustainability into all of our planning and decision making.”
