Surrey, BC –More than 1,000 residents joined in the celebration at the grand opening of South Surrey Recreation Centre’s new arts and fitness space on Saturday.

“The South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre expansion is part of the City’s ‘Build Surrey’ initiative and is an important investment into infrastructure to enhance recreation and the arts in our growing community,” says City of Surrey Mayor, Dianne Watts.

This free family event marked the official opening of the multi-generational facility’s 22,000 square foot addition, including an 8,000 square foot fitness centre, a new fitness studio and specialized arts space including: a multi-purpose exhibition space, visual arts studio and pottery studio. A new entrance and lobby provides a welcoming social gathering space and connects the existing facility with the adjoining new addition.

“The arts and fitness addition to South Surrey Recreation Centre was developed with extensive community consultation, open houses and focus groups with various users,” says Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “It provides a new home for Semiahmoo Arts, Semiahmoo Potters, Arts Umbrella and the South Surrey and White Rock Arts Society along with many physical activities for residents of all ages.”

The opening celebration featured a public art unveiling of an outdoor sculpture entitled “Ribbon” created by local artists Ruth Beer and Charlotte Wall. The event also included live music, community entertainment, face painting, art displays, demonstrations and more.

“Public art contributes significantly to the landscape, beautification and character of our town centres,” says Councillor Judy Villeneuve, Chair of the Public Art Advisory Committee. “Special thanks to our community partners, whose contributions will ensure generations of Surrey residents and visitors will enjoy public art in our city.”
