Bold sculpture by Legendary Canadian Artist Robert Davidson Unveiled

Supernatural Eye

November 28, 2013

SURREY, BC – For the next two years, visitors to the Surrey Arts Centre’s courtyard will be observed by the Supernatural Eye, a large scale sculpture by Canadian contemporary artist, Robert Davidson. The sculpture was unveiled on Wednesday by Councillor Judy Villeneuve and Polygon Homes Chairman, Michael Audain.

This aluminum sculpture measuring almost 3 metres is the second edition of a similar work on exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Supernatural Eye is on loan to the Surrey Art Gallery from Polygon Homes.

“This piece was the first work to be commissioned through the City of Surrey’s Private Development Public Art Program,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “We’re pleased to have it on exhibit at the Surrey Arts Centre until its permanent installation at Harvard Gardens in South Surrey in 2015.”

“Surrey is proud to have a sculpture by such a renowned artist,” commented Councillor Judy Villeneuve, Chair of the Public Art Advisory Committee and the Cultural Development Advisory Committee. “Robert Davidson has been an inspiration to generations of young artists, and especially to the many families in Surrey of aboriginal heritage. We thank Mr. Audain for commissioning this important work.”

Supernatural Eye’s graceful contours and bold colours combine the traditional visual iconography of Haida art with a contemporary aesthetic. Viewers will appreciate its elegant curving lines and simple bold red colour. Davidson’s inspiration was the many supernatural beings that dwell in Haida Gwaii. Value of the artwork is approximately $200,000.

The sculpture is owned by Polygon Homes, and was commissioned for Harvard Gardens in Surrey in accordance with the Private Development Public Art Program. It has been loaned for exhibition to the Surrey Art Gallery until the Harvard Gardens development is completed in 2015.
