City of Surrey Earns UBCM’s Community Excellence Award For Best Practices In Social Media

SURREY, BC – The City of Surrey has been awarded the UBCM’s 2013 Community Excellence Award for Best Practices in Social Media. The City has been growing its social media program since 2008 and currently engages several platforms in its social media mix, including Facebook, You Tube, Twitter, Google Plus, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.
During the first 6 months of 2013 the City has seen marked growth in interaction with its online social media tools; visits from Twitter to the City of Surrey website increased by 161% over the previous year and during the same period there were 935 pages shared from Surrey’s Facebook account.
“Social media is a great way to connect with residents and businesses to share insights day to day and share what’s happening around the City,” said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “With our young demographic, we are seeing increasing use of social media and mobile technologies and recognize the importance of connecting online with our citizens in a variety of ways.”
The City’s social media practices are part of an ongoing commitment to community engagement. Surrey is committed to open public engagement and providing high-quality client services to residents with the goal of creating a two-way dialogue with citizens who may not connect via traditional means.
