June 18, 2013
Surrey, BC – Visitors to this year’s Surrey Fusion Festival will get to experience some local culinary talent as part of the Flavours of Surrey held during Fusion Festival. Flavours of Surrey is the City’s premier food and agricultural awareness event celebrating local farming and food.
“We’re thrilled to have Chef Matthew Stowe be part of this year’s Flavours of Surrey,” commented Mayor Dianne Watts. “Not only is he from Surrey, but he brings unique skills to his cooking using local, fresh and sustainable ingredients.”
Indulge in delicious foods from the Safeway Celebrity Chef Stage. Access the farm fresh market where a variety of artisans and interactive farm activities will add to the fun of the festival. Bring the kids to see farm animals and participate in children’s activities such as seed planting and the straw maze while learning about local agriculture.
This year, Flavours of Surrey is pleased to welcome Chef Matthew Stowe, product development chef from Cactus Club Cafe, to the Safeway Celebrity Cooking Stage on Saturday, July 20th at 5:30 p.m. Chef Stowe recently won the title of Top Chef Canada on the third season of Food Network Canada’s competitive culinary show.
In addition to Chef Stowe, the Safeway Celebrity Cooking Stage will feature Chef Trevor Randle (Agriculture in the Classroom) and Superchefs Cookery for Kids.
“It’s great to have Flavours of Surrey as part of Surrey’s Fusion Festival,” said Councillor Mary Martin, Chair of Diversity Advisory Committee. “The celebration of food from the world is something that visitors to the festival look forward to each year.”
“With agriculture making up approximately one third of our land use in Surrey, celebrating this vital resource is tremendously important,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair, Agricultural and Food Security Advisory Committee.
“Having Chef Stowe appear on this year’s Safeway Celebrity Cooking Stage will not only be great fun to watch, it will be a chance for residents to learn some of his secrets and take away some new ideas,” said Mary D’Astolfo, Public Affairs, Safeway Canada.
