City of Surrey Receives Award for Engineering Excellence
June 18, 2013
Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey has been awarded the BC Association of Consulting Engineering Companies' (ACEC) 2013 Award for Excellence in Municipal Engineering. This award was presented jointly to the City’s consulting partner AECOM Canada and the City of Surrey for their engineering excellence achieved during the completion of the first phase of a new sewer system in the Bridgeview area of North Surrey.
“The City of Surrey has received this award in recognition of adopting current best practices for engineering,” says Mayor Dianne Watts. “It’s a great example of how the City continues prioritize investments in new infrastructure to meet future and long term needs.”
The existing vacuum sewer system has been in operation since the 1970s and is in process of being upgraded. The original system was at its maximum capacity, somewhat unstable and continually experienced service interruptions and a high level of maintenance. The new sewer system will increase sewer capacity and also stimulate economic development opportunities in the Bridgeview and South Westminster areas both serviced by the system upgrades.
Phase Two of this project is slated for completion by the end of 2013. Annual savings to the City will be approximately $250,000 upon completion of Phase Two.
The Awards for Engineering Excellence celebrate technical excellence and recognize innovation in engineering. Surrey received its ACEC-BC award in April at the Vancouver Convention Centre.
