Surrey, BC - More than 600 people were in attendance on Tuesday (June 11th, 2013) to celebrate the official opening of the new Playground at Holly Park.
“This spectacular playground is a welcome addition to the Guildford Community,” said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “The City is continually investing in recreation and parks amenities to enable more opportunities for families to keep healthy and active.”
The Holly Park Playground is a full service community playground designed with the latest and greatest in fully accessible playground features. It includes climbing structures and play equipment which cater to a variety of needs and abilities for both younger and older children. The playground includes a short walking track inspired by video games. Kids will pass through the power up area and gain points as they pass over medallions, adding their scores as they go. The playground benches have additional space to the side for walkers, strollers and wheelchairs. A future phase will include accessible picnic tables to be installed adjacent to the playground.
“One of the unique aspects of the playground is the accessibility features incorporated into the playground design,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee. “This is the first destination accessible playground completed in North Surrey.”
Funding for the playground included a $14,000 community grant contribution from the Tire Stewardship of BC to take advantage of recycled materials used for the project.
To help kick-off the re-opening of the facility, a community celebration was held featuring family activities and entertainment, a ribbon cutting, live music, community displays, and fun activities for all ages.
