April 12, 2013
SURREY, BC– City of Surrey alongside special event producer John Donnelly & Associates have been awarded the 2013 National Star Award for Best Public Entertainment Event in Canada for their collaborative work on the City of Surrey’s Canada Day 2012 Celebration.
The National Star Awards were announced at the Canadian Event Industry Awards gala held in Toronto on March 22, 2013. The Canadian Event Industry Star Awards are the country’s most prominent national event industry awards.
“It’s a tremendous achievement to be recognized on a national level for our Canada Day festival”, said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “On behalf of City Council, I’d like to congratulate and thank our many partners, sponsors and staff for staging the best Canada Day nationwide”.
“We are very proud of this award,” says company president John Donnelly. “It’s always a pleasure to be recognized for the commitment that goes into an event on the scale of Surrey Canada Day. This was our ninth year producing this great event with the City of Surrey so we’re all very pleased.”
“Surrey Canada Day, presented by Coast Capital Savings, is the largest Canada Day celebration in Western Canada, boasting over 100,000 attendees throughout the day and culminating with over 50,000 on site for the main stage headliner and finale fireworks", said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Park, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “ As a City with a diverse population and many young families, Canada Day is a great time to welcome proud Canadians from around the region to celebrate our country’s birthday and showcase our national pride and community spirit.”
In addition to the grand finale performance by Canadian Rock Icon Sam Roberts, the day also included a series of top-notch performers, action packed motocross demos, a Peak Performance Project double stage, amusement rides, soccer zone, and numerous family activations.
Past National Star Award recognition for City events included the annual Surrey Fusion Festival, a two-day multicultural event showcasing over thirty different cultural pavilions, as well as BC Event awards for Party for the Planet, Surrey’s Earth Day celebration, and Surrey’s 2010 Olympic Celebration Site.
