Surrey Wins International Award for Mobile Building Inspection Program
November 13, 2012
Surrey – The City of Surrey is being honoured in Barcelona this week for using technology to improve efficiencies. The City won ‘Best e-Government Prize’ in the Services category for being the first city in Canada to introduce a smart phone and mobile application for building inspections.
The award was presented this morning by the World e-Governments Organization of Cities and Local Governments (WeGO). The WeGO Awards recognize organizations around the world that are practicing e-government, and using information and communication technologies to improve efficiency and access to services.
“We’re honoured to receive an international award that recognizes our efforts to streamline our procedures and improve customer service,” says Mayor Dianne Watts. “The mobile building inspection program is an efficient way to do business, and helps ensure we are offering high quality service to residents, businesses and prospective investors.”
Surrey’s new program was launched last year and allows clients to schedule inspections using their smart phones, instead of having to call or visit City Hall. The program includes text messaging features, which let clients know when an inspector will arrive and provide updates, should an appointment need to be advanced or postponed. Once the inspection is completed, clients receive updates and results via email.
“The new program was developed following a major review of the building inspection process, which is complex and often requires multiple inspections. The application increases consistency and accuracy, and creates a more productive work environment,” says Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Mayor’s Red Tape Reduction Committee.
“Our new system improves communication, saves people significant time and cost by reducing the need to physically visit City Hall to conduct business, and prevents people from having to wait around on work sites,” says Councillor Marvin Hunt, Chair of the Investment and Innovation Committee.
