City Gears Up for Surrey Tree Lighting Festival
November 09, 2012
Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey is set to kick off the Christmas season with the return of the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival on Saturday, November, 24th at the Central City Plaza (13450 102nd Avenue). The public is invited to join Mayor and Council at Central City Plaza for a day of free family fun and the lighting of one of the tallest Christmas trees in Canada.
“The City of Surrey is excited to launch the holiday season and showcase our festive spirit with the annual tree lighting ceremony,” says Mayor Dianne Watts. “It will be a great opportunity to bring the community together for a free and fun event, so I encourage everyone to come down and enjoy the great entertainment!”
The Canadian electro pop band, Dragonette, will headline a free concert with supporting acts Dear Rouge; Revolver (The World’s Best Beatles Cover Band); Ronnie “Elvis” Scott; Langley Ukulele Ensemble; and more.
The Surrey Tree Lighting Festival, presented by Coast Capital Savings, also features winter activities such as road hockey and sleigh rides. In addition to live music, families can enjoy plenty of holiday cheer with face painters, kids’ crafts, ice carving demos, and even take a ride on the Ferris Wheel.
“We are excited to partner with the City of Surrey to present the Surrey Tree Lighting Festival, a great event that brings families and the community together and gets everyone in the holiday spirit,” says Wendy Lachance, Director, Community Leadership, for Coast Capital Savings. “The Coast Capital team will of course be part of the festivities and we invite kids of all ages to visit our booth where they can write a letter to Santa and drop it in our giant mailbox.”
Gates open at 12:00pm with Santa’s arrival at 1:00pm, the Tree Lighting Ceremony slated for 6:15pm and the concert finale at 7 pm. The entire festival is free for the public. The Surrey Food Bank, Surrey Christmas Bureau, and the Province Empty Stocking Fund will be onsite to collect donations.
