Talented & Dedicated Surrey Youth Honoured at 17th Youth Recognition Awards

2012 Youth Recognition Awards Winners

Surrey, BC – Awards were handed out to talented and dedicated Surrey youth at the 17th Annual Youth Recognition Awards on Friday evening (May 4th). The event, held at the Surrey Arts Centre, honoured both 2012 Youth Recognition Awards recipients and City Jam 2012 award recipients. A number of Surrey youth were recognized for their positive contributions to their community and for fulfilling personal achievements.

“I would like to congratulate the 2012 Youth Recognition Award recipients for their outstanding contributions to our City. These remarkable young people are true role models and they should be proud of their accomplishments,” said Mayor Dianne Watts.

“This year’s City Jam and submissions to the Youth Recognition Awards were outstanding,” said Linda Hepner, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Sport Tourism Committee. “Thank you to all the youth volunteers and organizers who have participated in making City Jam and the Youth Recognition Awards a resounding success.”

Recipients of 2012 Youth Recognition Awards are:

• Personal Achievement Category: Jennifer Utendale
• Creative Contributions Category: Thomas Nelles
• Community Spirit Category: Marlissa Moro
• Team Spirit Category: People Against Discrimination
• Junior Personal Achievement Category: Samantha Fick

The two month long City Jam 2012, a music and visual arts competition for youth, was held at the Fleetwood Community Centre from March to May 2012. The winners performed at Friday’s Youth Recognition Awards event. 2012 City Jam winners are:

City Jam Winners – Pre-teen category
• 1st place: Derrick Duong, 11 year old pianist
• 2nd place: Ava Carich, solo singer and guitarist

City Jam Winners – Youth category
• 1st place: Sam Hobeyn, solo singer
• 2nd place: Shadows, alternative indie band
• 3rd place: Northern Rain, band
• Visual arts award: Shaheen Virk, for her piece of art “Music and Nature”
