PARKit! Surrey’s New Urban Pop Up Park
April 17, 2012
Come and PARKit! at Surrey’s new pop-up park in the heart of Surrey City Centre. Asphalt parking space has been converted into a green, urban mini-park. PARKit! re-invents public spaces by transforming car spaces into people places. The temporary pop up park includes Astroturf covered platforms and furniture, a grassy area, plants, a deck area and a place for buskers, entertainment & food cart vendors.
“These temporary parks offer green space enhancements over the summer months and contribute to neighbourhood character and sense of community," said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “The Park-it features are pedestrian-friendly places where people can sit, meet, enjoy an outdoor lunch, or just hang out.”
PARKit! is located on City Parkway, by the Surrey Central Skytrain Station, and will be open from April 17 to 26 leading right into the Party for the Planet. Bring your own lunch, or choose something interesting from a range of food carts that will be at the pop-up park from 11:00am to 6:00pm daily. Different food vendors will appear every few days and will include Salvadorian pupusas, Vietnamese food, Asian grilled skewers, bubble tea, hot dogs and more!
The project also incorporates a social enterprise component. The City has invited Pacific Community Resource Services to participate in the event. The society provides a range of youth support services in the Surrey including a program to hire and train youth to obtain employment. For this event, the youth will be selling Pacific Dogs: hot dogs with a west coast flare.
Keep an eye out! The city plans to have PARKit pop up in other City places this summer.
