Judges Announced for Anti-Bullying Film Contest

January 25, 2012

Surrey – Community leaders are joining in the fight to stop bullying by participating in the judging panel for Surrey’s anti-bullying film contest. The panel will select the top three films in each category, and the members include:

  • Mayor Dianne Watts
  • Squire Barnes (Global BC News)
  • Buffy Cornell (Bluewave)
  • Brady Dahmer (Projecting Change Film Festival)

The City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP and CUPE Local 402 launched a new youth film contest earlier this month focusing on how or why we must put an end to bullying at school, at home and in the workplace. Students between the ages of 14 and 18 have been invited to submit a 30-second or 60-second film on this topic.

The deadline for students to submit films is 5pm on Monday, February 6th and winners will be announced on Anti-bullying Day, on February 29th.

Judging Panel ~ Community Leader Biographies:

Squire Barnes, Global BC News

Squire Barnes' entire working life has been spent in sports media. He has held several positions at Vancouver radio stations, written numerous columns and articles for print publications, produced a six-part television series, as well as award-winning documentaries.

Now, part of the 6pm newscast and News Hour Final with Randene Neill, he continues to be one of the station's most popular personalities, which can be attributed to his knowledge of sports and his slightly twisted sense of humour.

Buffy Cornell, Bluewave

Buffy is a 24-year-old full time University student completing her degree in history. Buffy volunteers with Bluewave Foundation educating youth about mental health issues, and aims to eliminate the stigma that surrounds these conditions. Buffy personally dealt with bullying growing up, and is passionate about helping youth who have experienced similar harassment. Buffy has worked on films with Bluewave that focus around mental health and the prevention of bullying.

Brady Dahmer, BDD and Projecting Change Film Festival

As CEO and Creative Director for his own Vancouver based strategic design agency, Brady Dahmer Design (BDD), Brady develops inspiring print, web and interactive projects for some of Canada’s leading corporate and consumer brands. Five Years ago, Brady created the Projecting Change Film Festival with partner Lindsay Nahmiache creating a legacy of increased community engagement in social and environmental causes through inspiring films and dynamic speakers. The 2011 festival included 30+ films from around the world screening at The SFU Woodward’s Cinema.
