City Hosts Send-off Event for Cyclist Committing an Inspiring Journey in Support of Clean Energy Awareness

November 09, 2011

Surrey, BC - The City of Surrey hosted a send-off event on Wednesday (November 9th) for a local cyclist and ambassador of clean energy. Janice Valdez will cycle through India to bring awareness to her cause and has committed to an inspiring journey in support of sustainability, healthy living and alternative clean energy transportation.

“We are inspired by Janice’s vision and support her efforts to advance clean technology and raise awareness around sustainable transportation choices,” says City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “We all need to work together to reduce our carbon footprint and create healthier communities.”

“I’m very pleased that Janice and her team have chosen Surrey for the launch of this exciting journey,” stated Councillor Marvin Hunt. “Under our EnergyShift program, the City is taking a strong leadership position in the areas of reducing energy consumption, advancing new technologies and enhancing sustainability. Surrey, like Janice, believes in taking action to help create a bright future for all. We wish her well in her travels.”

November 9th marks the start of Janice’s journey. She chose Surrey as her send-off destination, recognizing the City’s leadership in Clean Energy initiatives including electric vehicle implementation and inspired partially by its current Be Active Challenge campaign.

Making this journey even more unique is the fact that Janice will be riding on a BC-assembled Swiss electric bike. “Electric bikes have become more than merely a leisure vehicle for weekend trips,” says Florian Gabriel, Trade Commissioner for Switzerland for Western Canada. “These bikes are being adopted as commercial vehicles and offer a great alternative for a clean and green commute. Designed and engineered in Switzerland, I am confident that our cyclist can rely on best Swiss quality for her challenging undertaking.”

Humanergy, a new Electric Bike community for Metro Vancouver have partnered with, the Swiss Business Hub Canada and the City of Surrey in support of Janice’s electric bicycle journey through South and Southeast Asia. Janice Valdez is a Canadian-born cyclist with roots in the Philippines and raised in British Columbia.

Over a two-month period, the journey, called Cycle Our Light: Mumbai to Manila, will take Janice from Metro Vancouver to Mumbai onto Manila and back to Metro Vancouver in time to present to an international audience at Globe 2012. While abroad, Janice will spend her time as an ambassador of clean energy, promoting the benefits of a sustainable, healthy lifestyle.
