Surrey Honours Excellence in Urban Design & Sustainability

Surrey, BC – About 300 were in attendance on Tuesday for the City of Surrey’s inaugural 2011 City Awards Reception held at the new City Centre Library to celebrate excellence and achievement within the City of Surrey.

“The City Awards program recognizes citizens, community groups and businesses that have made outstanding contributions to our community,” said City of Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. “We want to foster a culture of excellence in Surrey and highlight the people and projects that are leading the way.”

The establishment of the Awards Program is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to programs and initiatives that support its vibrant community, promote modern urban development, and protect and enhance the environment.

Awards were presented (see Backgrounder below) to individuals, businesses and community groups in five distinct award categories:

  • NewCity Design Award: Recognizing Excellence in City Building
  • Clean Energy City Award: Recognizing Innovation in Energy Conservation and Efficiency
  • Heart in the City Award: Honouring Selfless Acts of Community Spirit
  • Beautiful City Award: Celebrating Outstanding Contributions in Community Beautification
  • Green City Award: Recognizing Environmental Leaders who Take Action & Inspire

The evening, hosted by Mark Madryga of Global TV, profiled 43 finalists, announced and presented 17 award recipients in the five Award categories following public and community nominations submitted earlier in the year. Another 26 Awards of Merit and Certificates of Recognition were also presented recognizing special contributions and honourable mentions within the finalists selected.
