Frequently Asked Questions

Hoping to make your life easier, here are some frequently asked questions that we hope will help you out in your journey with our volunteer program:

1. How much notice do I need to give if I am unable to make a shift?

It is recognized that absence due to illness or emergency situations is often beyond the control of our volunteers. Volunteers who are unable to report to work due to unforeseeable circumstances are required to advise their Supervisor at their earliest convenience. If you miss your shift without an explanation, you could jeopardize your volunteer position.

2. What happens if I don’t get an answer from Volunteer Resources?

Staff make every effort possible to return emails and voice mails within 2 business days.

3. How come I can’t see the same opportunities as my friend on www.MyVolunteerPage.com?

There could be a couple of reasons for this. First, your volunteer application may be incomplete. Second, your friend might be a volunteer for an area within the City of Surrey that you did not apply for.  You can add yourself to other areas by going to www.surrey.ca/6028.aspx and applying for new areas.  Make sure to use your existing MyVolunteerPage.com username and password to ensure you don't create duplicate profiles.

4. I’ve signed up for a shift, why isn’t it on my schedule yet?

While you may have signed up, it does not mean that you have been (or will be) scheduled by the Supervisor.

5. When I signed up, there was still space available, and now it’s full. Why wasn’t I scheduled?

Space for volunteer shifts may be limited; if many volunteers have signed up for the same role, unfortunately not all may be assigned. Typically, Supervisors schedule based on a first-come, first scheduled basis, so you may be on the back-up list.

6. Can I use your name as a reference for job applications?

The City of Surrey does not provide personal references. If you are interested in obtaining a letter that speaks to what typical skills and experiences volunteers in your role have, please contact your volunteer supervisor.

7. I want to volunteer in another area, do I need to do another criminal record check/reference checks?

No, as long as you are an active volunteer, you do not need to complete another criminal record check. Depending on the area you are interested in, your references may be contacted a second time.

8. Is there a dress code for volunteering with the City of Surrey?

Volunteers should reflect a professional, respectful image for the organization by wearing attire that is appropriate to their position and the community that they serve. Clothing must be free of profanity, inappropriate content and corporate logos with adult content, such as alcohol or tobacco companies. When provided, volunteers are asked to wear their assigned uniform and identification.

For more information, talk to your Supervisor or check our Surrey Parks, Recreation & Culture Volunteer Handbook.
